What We Do

Fresh, delicious produce is our passion! In fact, it’s all we do. PPI began packing tomatoes over 25 years ago and is now one of the largest fresh produce packers in the area. However, that’s not all we do. We also pack a wide variety of fresh produce year-round for high-end restaurants, value-conscious retail chains, and everything in between. We understand that every customer is unique, so all orders are customizable and flexible. From fresh-cut and splits to last-minute orders and unique quantities, we do it all.

Customization truly sets us apart from other produce companies. Many will use the term customization, but they will only allow you to select from pre-determined custom options.

PPI allows you to customize from order size, packaging requirements, delivery schedule, package branding, and package labeling to produce quantity. You may want a bag instead of a carton or a container with a specific type of lid. No problem. We’ll go so far as to customize blends, including or excluding certain ingredients to best fit your customer needs.

PPI is always looking at the latest trends to ensure we stay on the cutting edge of produce and consumer trends. We thank you for helping us continue to lead the way in produce.

Produce Packaging History

Produce Packaging Inc. (PPI) is one of three family-owned companies along with The Sanson Company and Great Lakes Packers, Inc. PPI was founded in 1994 to repack tomatoes for The Sanson Company. Nearly two decades later, PPI is a leader in produce repacking and value-added items.

As early as 1996, PPI helped pioneer fresh-cut for retail stores. Fresh-cut grew in popularity with packaged salad greens in grocery stores but has grown steadily over the last two decades to accommodate consumers’ busy lifestyles. Diced onions, celery sticks and carrot sticks are a staple in many American homes today.

PPI still excels in fresh-cut, delivering the highest quality products on short notice. In fact, our two fastest growing areas are both in fresh-cut. The first is our single portion servings for schools. The second is purees for food manufacturers. In addition, we specialize in unique items including spiral (zucchini, yellow squash, beet, butternut and sweet potato), butternut fettuccine and planks (zucchini, yellow squash, butternut and sweet potato).

In 2006, PPI purchased and renovated a 135,000-square-foot facility close to the Cleveland Produce Terminal. That centralized location was a turning point in our business, giving us access to many different growers, some of whom provide locally-grown and organic produce. The ability to provide our customers with in-season produce all year long has proven to be a valuable and necessary asset to our business. By 2017, PPI had outgrown its current home and began looking for a location to build for the future. In December 2019, that dream became a reality when we moved into a newly-renovated space in Willoughby Hills, OH.

For years, PPI has built our reputation not only on fresh, carefully-selected produce, but also on offering customers extensive customization at nearly every level of our operation. From packaging and branding to shipping and beyond, you can always count on customized solutions and flexible, one-of-a-kind service from PPI.
